NAMU at W Seoul-Walkerhill,Korea

Liquid

Action

Ice

Fire

Passive

Love and Lust

Acclaimed New York-based international designer, Tony Chi, has made his mark at the chic new W Secoul-Walkerhill, South Korea, with unique and exciting designs for two top class restaurants, Namu and Kitchen.

Chi, famed for his designs for such new eateries as Asiate(New York), NoMi(Chicago), ye shanghai(Shanghai), is delighted with the Seoul concepts.
"They are sophisticated and elegant, but with a rustic ambience that is in keeping with their surroundings," he says. "At the same time they are avant garde enough to fit the W Seoul-Walkerhill image.

Like a quality red wine aged in the wood for character, Chi's design for Namu (food of "Asia tomorrow") draws its inspiration, its character(and its name) from its surrounds, the timber structure that is its hame in the shadow of Mt Acha.

From this flows Chi's focus on the natural elements: Liquid for the calm of the bar; Ice for the Sashimi/Crustaccan area; and Fire for the Grill section. Wood is the focal point for the restaurant.

Liquid
On the other end of the main axis that transverses the W Living room, is Namu with a facade composed of a transparent wall of trees and soju(alcoholic beverages) bracketed by rough stone walls and a large wooded gate.Namu has been broken down into many areas, or restaurants within a restaurant, to represent the many tastes of madern Korea.

As the guest passes through the gate into Namu they find themselves in the liquid room surrounded by "the forest" and "Spirits of life".As a contrast to the soju at the entry the lounge is surrounded with more glass cases filled with single male beverages, sake and soju.

Action
Nine trees of Namu surround the bar. These rich, rough-faced wood liquor towers perpendicular to the bar offer a "view through the trees" to the other rooms of the restaurant.

Ice
Surrounded with deep, rich wood finishes the crustacean/sashimi bar and sake cellar, with cold sake storage and long gathering table, offer a cozy, carefree environment for individuals or groups to gather to eat and drink.

Fire
The cabin-like barbeque area surrounded with stacks of logs is an intimate environment for people to enjoy hearty food and to view the actions of the chefs to excite the senses.

Passive
The main dining hall is an elegant space that is focused on the spectacular hillside view of Seoul and the Han River. This room is versatile and can be used as a special event dining hall for large parties to gather and celebrate. But foremost if offers a dining experience that is more towards the finer end of the spectrum.

Love and Lust
Adjacent to the passive room are two wings with private dining rooms.
To the left are two Tatami Rooms, "Love", offering a truly traditional experience and to the right are two Western style private dining rooms, "Lust", to be used for intimate gatherings.Outside the Lust rooms, to help fuel the "Love & Lust" is a wall of private liquor trays for the guest to store their "spirits of life".
